MyID.is Now In Public Beta, Aims To Become The Digital Certification Standard
Digital certification platform MyID.is is taking a crack at offering a way for people to claim their real identity online, in order to be able to prevent ID theft and to verify content they publish on their blogs, social networking accounts, photo & video sharing sites, and so on.
Additionally, the site offers (yet another) way to manage your online identity and doubles as a certified OpenID provider. The site has been in alpha testing for the past 8 months and as of yesterday entered into public beta.
This is how it works: you register for a MyID.is Certified account on the website, and enter your personal details, which are later verified by the team (I’ll get to the issues with this later). They do this by cross-checking the name you submitted with the one on your credit card - they’ll charge a fee between $2 and $5 to verify that it is yours, similar to how Google checks your credit card details for an AdSense account - and by sending a 6-digit code to your postal address which you have to enter to verify your identity on their platform. No other democracy has yet introduced biometric identity cards, which Israel recently decided to do, and the only nondemocracy to have done so is Hong Kong, according to a study by the Knesset's research center.
One reason for this reluctance is that biometric identity cards require establishing a centralized database with biometric data on every citizen and legal resident of the country.

Belgium expanding electronic ID program to children
The Belgian government is expanding it’s electronic identification card initiative to include all children under the age of 12. The program consists of a dedicated electronic ID with specific features intended to increase their security in emergency situations.
In particular, a special hotline number is printed on the card body of the child’s ID card so that his parents can be alerted as soon as possible. Zetes is the systems integrator for the project and Gemalto is providing the smart cards.
The size of a credit card, the new Kids-ID card features three main functionalities. Firstly, it acts as an electronic national ID credential for Belgian children and also serves as an official travel document in most European countries. Amy has been continuously active in theater and music since she was a little girl and maintains these theatrical talents to this day while expanding into professional singing as well. In elementary school, Amy was in her first play and got the role of “talking tree” and ever since that moment she knew that performing arts and music would be her calling. She has been in multiple plays at a wide range of venues over the past years acting and singing in several very well known productions including Broadway Bound’s “The Wizard of Oz” featured as Dorothy, and "High School Musical" where she was featured as Gabriella. Amy was also recently a featured singer in her high school cast of “Cats”.
Though she is only 17 and does not yet have her first full length album, Amy is more than well on her way. “You're Near”, a very moving tune off her new 4 song demo, received airplay in Seattle shortly after its release in late 2008. The song was also the featured song on The Memorial Music Library Homepage at www.memorialmusiclibrary.com for several months in 2008. “Rendezvous,” an up tempo and flirty love song was recently featured on the Ron and Don Show “Make or Rake the Band”. Recently, Amy even scored high enough through Everett’s “Aquasox Idol” to sing the national anthem at an upcoming Sox game this 2009 season. It seems the opportunities just keep coming and this vivacious artist grabs hold to each one!
Amy performed her first official concert of her own original music for a packed out house at the infamous Brick in Roslyn, WA and left the crowd wanting more! Amy is in the process of building a professional band with her producer/manger in Seattle and is also heading back to the studio to record again this summer. Her upbeat personality and quirky sense of humor make her easy to be around and easy for audiences to relate to. Amy is now in search of her own record label and with the contagious vibe her demo presents it seems a likely outcome. Her song “Don’t Give Up” is an inspirational masterpiece in these tough economic times and will also be her motto as she pursues what will likely become a very “mainstream” career in the music industry and theater business.

The iPhone as a student ID card? That may be next at Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., which, thanks to an entrepreneurial firm created by Stanford students has already produced a suite of iPhone applications that include the university’s course catalog, campus map and other resources.
Called iStanford, the application suite was rolled out in October and has already garnered national attention, including winning the $10,000 grand prize for AT&T’s “Big Mobile on Campus” contest for best smart phone application. One of the student members of the firm said he would also like to see the iPhone replace student identification cards sometime in the future.

While some students may complain when they have to fork over money for a replacement student ID card that was originally free, most have little choice if they want to keep availing themselves of the university’s services.
Still, CR80News wondered what was the going rate for lost or stolen cards. We interviewed 20 campus card administrators and discovered that replacement rates vary widely, from as little as $5 a card to $25. Some even had varying rates, depending on whether this was the first, second or third time a student may have lost his card, or whether he was trying to replace a simple mag stripe card or one with more advanced technology on it.
The responses from campus card administrators pretty much track a “Benchmarking Survey” conducted six years ago by the National Association of Campus Card Users, which listed universities charging from $5 to more than $25 for a lost or stolen card. Two thirds of universities responding charged either $10 or $15. Keep in mind these are six-year-old figures. Read More

When badges first hit our offices we didn't quite know how to wear them. Most people have stuck to putting a plain old black cord, id attached, around their neck every morning. Some brave souls began wearing lanyards in the colors of their favorite sport teams, or some museum they visited.
Now it seems as if every conference or training session I go to the organizers hand out Imprinted lanyards with the name of the event sponsor on it. Lanyard as advertising tool.
Now the lanyard has become a fashion statement.
Some women are wearing beautiful lanyards made of fabulous beads and crystals. They look more like a necklace than a chain to hold an id.
Others wear lanyards covered with pins, or "flair" as the restaurant boss told Jennifer Aniston in the movie Office Space.

Weymouth High School students look more like employees at a business firm with the new identification cards they must wear while attending class or a school event.
The identity card contains a student’s picture that is attached to a neck lanyard
“We’ve introduced a new ID card,” said Weymouth High Principal Anthony Pope to the school committee on Feb. 12. . “We are one of the only high schools in the area that requires students to display the ID around their neck.”
School officials previously required students to carry a picture ID in their wallet or pocketbook but they did not have to display it except upon request by a teacher or administrator.
Students have been wearing the new ID’s since the second semester began a little more than a week ago.
“The students must wear the ID at all times,” Pope said. “We see this as a requirement for school safety purposes. We want to be able to identify our students if there is an incident.”
He said the students have been quite cooperative with wearing the ID’s.
“The students have done an amazing job,” Pope said. “I stood in the connecting corridor one day and saw about 90 kids walk by that were wearing their ID’s. We still have 2 percent of the school population that we are working with to get them in the habit of wearing the ID’s.” Read More...

Senators name names with new badges

Joel Henretty wants to make clear he's a senator for the Associated Students of Boise State University - not a bookstore employee.
"I was in the bookstore after a meeting, when a girl came up and asked where some textbook was," he said. "At first I was confused, but then I realized she saw my name tag - and thought I worked there."
ASBSU senators currently wear the same nametags as other Boise State employees. The white plastic placards that dangle from a lanyard are identical in design to those hanging from dozens of non-senators' necks.
Henretty and the other senators hope their new nametags will identify them as members of student government to their constituents. They hope that being identifiable will make students more willing to talk to them about campus issues.

We get many calls from customers looking for a “Neck cords, ID necklace, ID Cord, ID Hanger then we let the customer know “oh your looking for a lanyards” then the customer reply’s “What’s a Lanyard?”
In our industry of selling identification products the product holding your ID badges, Trade show pass, Coaches Whistle and now in the digital age USB devices and Cell phones that have a cord attached is called a lanyard.
I decided to do a web search to get as much information I could find regarding the definition

A lanyard, lanyards, or wrist strap is a rope or cord often worn around the neck or wrist to carry something. Usually it is used where there is a risk of losing the object or to ensure it is visible at all times. Aboard ship, it may refer to a piece of rigging used to secure objects, or to a cord with a hook at the end which is used to fire a cannon.
In the military, lanyards were originally used to connect a pistol, sword or whistle (for signaling) to a uniform on a semi-permanent basis. Lanyards were used in situations where there was a good chance of otherwise losing the object - commonly by cavalry and naval officers at sea. A well made pistol lanyard can be easily removed and reattached by the user, but otherwise will stay connected to the pistol whether it is drawn or in a holster. Lanyards later became more decorative.
Lanyards of various color combinations and braid patterns are also commonly worn on the shoulders of military uniforms to denote the wearer's qualification or regimental affiliation. Many regiments were originally mounted and wore the lanyard on the left, enabling the rider to pull a whistle from his left tunic pocket and maintain communication with the rest of his troop.
Simple lanyards made of braided fabric with a clip attached to the end are used frequently in retail and business situations for holding name badges. The typical arrangement is to attach a plastic badge holder with at least one clear side to the lanyard, with the person's name badge facing the front and occasionally small items such as business cards, pens or tools stashed behind the badge for easy access. Such lanyards can also be used as key chains, particularly in situations where keys can easily be lost for lack of storage, such as gyms, public pools and communal showers.
Lanyards are widely used with small electronic devices such as cameras, MP3 players and USB flash drives to prevent loss or dropping. Electronics designed to take a lanyard usually have a small through-hole built into a corner or edge of the case or anchored to the frame of the device; the corresponding lanyard generally has a loop of thread on the end that is attached to that hole with a simple knot, usually a cow hitch. Some earphones incorporate the audio signal into the lanyard, meaning it doubles up as headphone cords as well. Lanyards are often used to keep keys on.
Lanyards are commonly used to display badges, tickets or ID cards for identification where security is required. Many public places such as hospitals, prisons and some schools as well as public gatherings such as pop concerts, conventions and trade fairs as well as many commercial enterprises.
Lifeguards typically use lanyards to accommodate their whistles for the obvious reason that they lack pockets.
The Wii Remote uses a sort of lanyard, called a wrist strap, due to its nature to be swung around by the player.
Lanyards are usually attached to dead man's switches or "kill switches" on dangerous machinery, such as large industrial cutting/slicing machines, and also on vehicles, such as jet-skis or trains, so that if the operator suddenly becomes incapacitated, their fall will pull on the lanyard attached to their wrist, which will then pull the switch to immediately stop the machine or vehicle.
Lanyards can be custom printed with a slogan or company logo to promote your business or add additional security to your employees and staff.

Scammer at the Door?

Would you open your door to a stranger? Although many of us would say no, a number of consumers are being tricked into letting people in, and then getting robbed.
We've heard from a number of consumers who tell us that somebody comes to the door, stating that he or she is a contractor or from a utility, and that they need to talk about work being done in the neighborhood.
As they proceed to tell a confusing story, they convince the consumer to open the door so that they can show them something or explain something in greater detail. Once in, they continue to distract the consumer, while another theif sneaks in at a different door, and quietly robs the consumer of valuables kept in other rooms.
Sometimes, contractors or utility workers will have legitimate reasons for talking to a consumer. So how can you spot the good guys from the bad guys?
Reputable contractors or utility workers will have an ID Badge, that clearly identifies who they are and the company that they are represening. They will also likely have a company vehicle that has a logo, phone number, and in-state license plates on both the front and back of the vehicle. And, they will not pressure you to enter your home on the spot.
If you're not sure who is at the door, keep the doors locked and do not open them until you are completely sure of who you are talking to. Talk to the stranger through the door, asking them to show you information through the window. Do not answer questions or provide any personal information, especially if they ask when you plan on being home.
If you suspect that the person at your door may be a scam artist, call the police immediately and ask them to check things out.

Security Imaging is always looking for ways to use new technology in the Security Industry. We now offer a new service allowing you to verify your employees using your Apple iPhone and QR barcode.

What is a QR Code?
Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR barcodes are now used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications and convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users (known as mobile tagging).
