New Pennsylvania law requires physicians to wear photo IDs

States are working to guarantee that patients know whom they are seeing and are not deceived by health professionals who misrepresent their training.
By CAROLYNE KRUPA, amednews staff. Posted Dec. 20, 2010.

A new Pennsylvania law aims to make it clear for patients who is taking their blood pressure, giving them an injection or preparing to operate on a loved one.

Under the law signed Nov. 23 by Gov. Edward Rendell, physicians, nurses and other health care professionals soon will be required to wear photo identification badges that state their credentials in large block letters, with descriptions such as "physician" or "registered nurse."
"The idea is that you can read this instantly at a conversational distance," said John J. Laskas Jr., MD, a dermatologist in Glen Mills, Pa., and chair of the Pennsylvania Academy of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery's patient safety and scope of practice committee. "Then the patient knows and can make a judgment whether or not this is the level of expertise they need. We need to know and have a right to know the credentials of the person who is giving us care." SECURITY IMAGING RENEWS PARTNERSHIP WITH MOLLY HELMUTH

SEATTLE (Oct. 28, 2010) — NASCAR Whelen All-American Series rookie of the year Molly Helmuth is pleased to announce the continuation of her partnership with Security Imaging Corporation.

The Seattle company was the 15-year-old’s primary sponsor during her inaugural season racing in the Mini-Stock division at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash., and will continue to support her throughout the 2011 racing season.

“We’re proud to support an up-and-coming young female driver, but from a business standpoint it is also a great fit for our company,” said Emily Dick, senior account manager. “Security Imaging is a leader in online sales of badge holders, lanyards, photo ID card printers, wristbands and other products used throughout the racing community.”

In business since 1996, Security Imaging has the largest supply of photo ID supplies on the Internet and past and current customers include corporations, military, government, schools and universities, and large and small businesses across the United States and internationally.

The online catalog at www.securityimaging.com displays just a portion of the products available from the company, and customers are encouraged to contact the Security Imaging staff with questions or to request a particular item. Many of the products Security Imaging sells can be customized, making them a low-cost and effective method for marketing in addition to meeting an operational need.

“Tracks, traveling series and race teams all over the country are already purchasing our products,” said Dick. “We hope they’ll ask themselves, ‘Why not purchase from this company that is supporting a young female driver?’”

The announcement is the latest in a string of good news for Molly Helmuth, who was recently invited by legendary IndyCar driver Lyn St. James to attend Phase I of the prestigious Women in the Winner’s Circle Academy Nov. 19-21 in Phoenix. Prior to that the Seattle native will take part — again by invitation — in the Talent Search Shoot-Out held by Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle, a NASCAR-focused racing career development program.

Behind the scenes, a Ford Mustang is being prepared for Helmuth’s sophomore season racing in the Mini-Stock Division at Evergreen Speedway. She also plans on driving a four-cylinder late-model in select events held by the Northwest Pro4 Alliance series and racing her kart whenever possible.

Helmuth began racing karts in 2006 and has competed in the Northwest Rotax Series throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada. When NASCAR lowered the age limit to 14 for the 2010 season, she entered the Mini-Stock division with a front-wheel drive Volkswagen Corrado. Racing against drivers twice her age, Helmuth became a fan favorite by bumping, passing, spinning out and crashing as she learned how to handle and race her car.

The youngest driver to ever win Rookie of the Year honors in the Mini-Stock division at Evergreen Speedway, Helmuth finished the 2010 season No. 5 (of 31) in the series standings. She also won a trophy dash in August at Idaho’s Stateline Stadium Speedway while racing with the Northwest Outlaws Series.

ID Card Software – The Growing Need For Security

Gone are the days when people have been sporting ID cards or badges for the sole purpose of identifying themselves as part of an organization or business enterprise. With the innovations made in the printing technology, the ID card software and printer have made it possible for this simple ID badge to be more than just an identifying tool. Now more than ever, businesses are using the ID for attendance monitoring and time keeping related functions. More importantly, it is being used for a higher level of security access control. The ID card has indeed become multi-functional. It has equipped businesses with a more efficient and effective system for record keeping, monitoring and security.

The demand for enhanced company security measures has paved the way for IT providers and manufacturers to come up with products that will address this need. Affordable but sophisticated ID card printers have opened the doors to in-house printing. This has in turn provided companies with full control on the production and quality of their own identification cards. Your company can easily monitor the production of the ID cards. It can also regulate the design, security features and number of IDs printed. As your company does not need to outsource your ID card requirements, information and other security features embedded in your ID card is now kept confidential.

A clearly defined photo on the ID card can help your security personnel easily match the photo with the face of the wearer entering the company premises. A good HD printer can deliver on this requirement together with an ID card that cannot be easily tampered. An over laminate feature of the printer can ensures double protection in your ID card. The right ID card software can help you incorporate a holographic design or watermark in your company ID. This can make it more secure and would deter counterfeiters and forgers from making a duplicate out of it. Read More...

Photo badges beef up campus security

By Lois Tomas

Stopping in at the school to visit your child’s teacher? Be prepared to say “cheese.”

School officials are requiring visitors, volunteers and others who come on to campus to register at a computer terminal in the front offices of all three schools. Once the information is entered, a photograph is taken and a visitor’s badge is printed out.

“This is just an added security and safety measure,” Assistant Schools Superintendent Mark Leek said.

The software is provided at no charge to the school by Identi-kid, a company with whom the school has been associated for years. The company provides finger printing and photo identification to parents to be used in child abduction or other scenarios.

PHS students, staff ready for ID badges

They were a little resistant at first, but once they understood the reasoning behind it, members of the Prescott High School Student Council decided that displaying PHS identification badges at all times was "no big deal."

The reason, school administrators said, is safety. With ID badges in plain sight, school officials will know who does and - more importantly - does not belong on the PHS campus.

Starting Sept. 8, all PHS students, teachers and staff members must wear their ID badges so the badges are visible all time. This means wearing the ID badge on a lanyard or other form of neckwear, or clip - as long as it is above the waist on the outside of clothing.

PHS Student Council Vice President Tess Peterson realizes that displaying the ID badge is a "small thing."

Elected to represent their fellow classmates, the class presidents said that at first they wondered why the administration was taking such an action, and if it was necessary at PHS.

"A good majority of students thought this was going a little overboard and was just another rule we had to live with," Sophomore Class President Levi Rosdahl.

The new ID badge requirement is the result of Prescott High's North Central Accreditation process. Read More...

School staff should know who belongs by wearing id badges

The Daily Courier

Prescott High School is implementing, effective Sept. 8, a policy of having teachers, staff and students wear identification badges at all times. They must be displayed, not kept in a pocket, wallet or purse.

District employees with whom The Daily Courier spoke cited the need to meet North Central Accreditation guidelines for security. Students saw it as "no big deal" once they learned the idea was to keep the campus safer for the students.

Principal Totsy McCraley said the ID badges would allow everyone to know with whom they are talking. Teachers will be able to greet students by name as they enter the buildings, and students will be able to learn each other's names and what grade they are in.

What happened to knowing your students and colleagues as a matter of course? In our experience, even schools with large student populations have had little problem with this by having teachers and staff in the halls between classes and getting to know their charges.

Online comments at dCourier.com have likened the badges to the World War II era of Nazis requiring Jews to wear yellow stars for identification.

We do not believe it rises quite to that level; however, the flaw comes with NCA officials thinking this is a good thing - when more of a community environment is what we need.

School officials said with ID badges in plain sight, they will know who does and does not belong on the campus.

From HID Global's Fargo brand come three new direct-to-card printers designed to make access card and badge printing both simple and secure.
Aug. 31, 2010 -- HID Global's Fargo card printer business unit is out today with a new line of printers aimed to fit the needs of small businesses all the way to government and enterprise- level end users who need to create identification badges and access control cards. Announced today were the DTC1000, the DTC4000 and the DTC4500 "direct- to-card" printers that can handle both the badge printing as well as the card programming/reading. It's been since 2008 that the industry has seen a product launch of this magnitude from Fargo; it was June 2008 when Fargo launched the DTC400e (a predecessor to the printers in today's launch) along with the Personal M30e and C30e card printers. The new line is also notable as they are the first card printers Fargo has launched since the acquisition by ASSA ABLOY's HID Global brand.
The new printers are designed with security in mind. All of the units feature password protection to ensure that only authorize users can print cards, and the high-end model (the DTC4500) can handle specialty security printing features done on card laminates, such as holographic images, as well as ultraviolet printing. Can you tell the difference between official and fake?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Eloise Rodgers lives alone and has for nearly 30-years.

"If I was going to let someone in I would ask for their I.D."

But how does Eloise know that I.D. is real? K-U-B is one utility that spends a fair amount of time working in neighborhoods. For her, there's more than an I.D. that gives her peace of mind.

"I would look at their truck first. They always have it labeled. Then I would ask for the I.D. before I let them inside," said Rodgers.

"K-U-B encourages customers to always ask for a photo identification badge when anyone claiming to work for the utility comes to their home," Grace Whiteside from KUB told WVLT. Read More...

Enforcement lax on badge policy

Sunday, February 28, 2010
By MICHAEL McAULIFFE
mmcauliffe@repub.com
SPRINGFIELD - School Committee member Antonette E. Pepe was at Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical High School one day earlier this month and was very upset by something she did not see: a single student wearing an identification badge.

Pepe wants each of the city's nearly 25,500 public school students to wear an ID badge. The School Committee passed a policy in 2002 that middle school and high school students wear badges, but it has gone dormant.

"It's a major issue," Pepe said last week. "You want safety in the schools, and this is one of the ways to provide that."

Are you a small company that needs ID badges? Or maybe a larger company that doesn't have the time to print employee ID badges?

Wearing an ID badge in today's world is extremely important. Whether you have a security guard that checks IDs or you have an access control system, Identification cards help keep your work place safe by helping other employees recognize who is allowed in the building and who isn't.

Some companies have access control badges but a lot of those companies still don't have photo ID cards. Security Imaging can print on adhesive PVC cards that you can adhere to your existing Access card so that your card not only grants access but shows who you are.

Church World Service - Hygiene Kits for Haiti

The church of Brethern is planning several responses to yesterday’s earthquake in Haiti.

Damage assessment teams have just begun their work, but it is already clear that damage and loss of life are quite high.

The Church of the Brethren coordinates its relief efforts with Church World Service, the service arm of the National Council of Churches USA. In fact, the Brethren Service Center in Maryland is the receiving point for contributions from most other mainline US denominations.

Over the next three Sundays, we invite your outreach donations toward Haiti Disaster Relief. Cash contributions will be used to create Hygiene Kits, or to support direct relief through the Church of the Brethren or Church World Service.

You can follow this link for instructions on making hygiene kits.

ID required for school visits

Dear HPISD Parents,

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority in HPISD. Thanks to funding provided by the 2008 bond issue, we are making security enhancements on every HPISD campus.

In February, we are introducing a system that requires all visitors and volunteers to wear badges while they are on campus.

Since HPISD welcomes the many volunteers and visitors who are an integral and valued part of our campus life, we want to be sure the phase-in goes smoothly. Below are questions and answers for those visiting our campuses.

Q: What are the general procedures for visitors?

A: When the visitor arrives, he/she will be greeted and asked for photo identification.
  • A state-issued driver's license is the preferred ID. For those visitors who do not have a driver's license, we will also accept a government-issued photo ID such as a state ID card or green card.
  • The ID will be run through the Raptor system, which HPISD recently purchased for each campus in order to screen for registered sex offenders. The system will compare the name of the visitor to a national sex offender database, which only takes a few seconds. Once the visitor is cleared, he/she will be issued a badge.
  • The visitor will be expected to check out at the front office when leaving the campus. read more

Utility Urges Customers To Ask For Photo ID Credentials
