Schools require building visitors surrender IDs
By Bill Fortier TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF
wfortier@telegram.com
Visitors entering any of the town’s schools now must leave a driver’s license or other form of government issued picture ID at the office.
The ID is traded for a visitors card, and the ID is returned at the end of the visit.
Middle School Assistant Principal John J. Giordano III, who is chairman of the School Department’s safety committee, and Superintendent Maryellen Brunelle said the beefed up security is not the result of a specific incident but simply an attempt to make students as safe as possible. Read more...

National ID cards on the way?

Staff Writer, CNET News
In a vote that largely divided along party lines, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a Republican-backed measure that would compel states to design their driver's licenses by 2008 to comply with federal antiterrorist standards. Federal employees would reject licenses or identity cards that don't comply, which could curb Americans' access to everything from airplanes to national parks and some courthouses. Read More...

Fake IDs in a few keystrokes on Web
I found this great story regarding fake Ids.
By Patrik Jonsson | Special to The Christian Science Monitor
SAVANNAH, GA. -
Above the bar at Wet Willy's hang hundreds of counterfeit driver's licenses hailing from New Jersey to Florida.
The collage of bemused mugs constitutes a lineup of underage barflies, nabbed at the door of this popular riverfront lounge and sent skulking back out into the night. For the bouncers, busting underage drinkers is almost a certain satisfaction: Here at Wet Willy's, they average about eight fake IDs a weekend. Read more...

What's a Lanyard and How it Can be Used.
What is a lanyard in fact? I can tell you that you can see lanyards every day because they are used in almost every domain. Many people haven't even heard about lanyards although they all know what they are. So basically people just don't know what they are called.
Some good definitions of a lanyard are a neck strap, security strap, ID strap or ID cord. So any of you have seen a lanyard worn one, bought one. They are quite popular.
A lanyard is a piece of material worn around the neck for hanging small objects. So what are the advantages of lanyards? Well think about having an object that you need at hand and still both hands free. It's an useful thing to have.

Securing the Schoolyard - Megan Roth Contributor
Yesterday I discussed the need for increased security measures concerning school visitors. As pointed out in my post, it’s completely necessary in order to ensure student safety (which can never be 100% guaranteed, but we can do our best to come close to a guarantee).
Now what about school faculty and staff? Should they be required to wear an ID? Say the answer is "Yes, they should." Does that ID really do much in the way of improving safety? Should teachers be allowed to come and go as they please, through whatever entrance/exit they please?

Changes coming for students this school year
First, we are requiring that all (ninth-, 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade) students wear their identification badges throughout the academic day this school year. The staff at our school is required to wear ID badges during working hours also.
This is mainly a safety and security effort on our part. As our numbers have increased over the years, it has become harder for our staff to recognize our students as readily as they could when the student population was half of what it is today.

ID applications that scare the public
The identification industry had a wakeup call in 2005 when parents protested the use of RFID tags in student ID badges at Brittan Elementary School in Sutter, Calif.
RFID tags were used to take attendance at the school when the children walked in the door. The plan was to eventually place scanners around the school to monitor student movement throughout the day. But it didn’t get that far.
Parents rallied against the system, and legislation is still pending in the California legislature to impose restrictions on ID technologies that communicate via radio frequency waves.

School ID badges anger parents
Students in a small rural town in California are now required to wear radio-frequency ID badges in school. Many parents are outraged by the new system, and have told their children not to wear the badges.
Brittan Elementary School in Sutter, CA, introduced the badge system on January 18. Each student must wear the ID card, which includes their photo, name and grade. A wireless transmitter beams their ID number to a teacher’s handheld computer when they walk through the doorway. A similar device is used to track livestock. View story
