Schools require building visitors surrender IDs

Visitors entering any of the town’s schools now must leave a driver’s license or other form of government issued picture ID at the office.

The ID is traded for a visitors card, and the ID is returned at the end of the visit.

Middle School Assistant Principal John J. Giordano III, who is chairman of the School Department’s safety committee, and Superintendent Maryellen Brunelle said the beefed up security is not the result of a specific incident but simply an attempt to make students as safe as possible. Read more...

Gregoire signs bill rejecting national ID card

OLYMPIA -- Gov. Chris Gregoire, who is developing a high-tech state driver's license that can serve as a border-crossing document, signed legislation Wednesday rejecting Real ID, a federal identification requirement that would essentially create a national ID card.

The legislation is part of a growing rebellion against an expensive federal mandate that the American Civil Liberties Union says would threaten personal privacy. Read More...

National ID cards on the way?

In a vote that largely divided along party lines, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a Republican-backed measure that would compel states to design their driver's licenses by 2008 to comply with federal antiterrorist standards. Federal employees would reject licenses or identity cards that don't comply, which could curb Americans' access to everything from airplanes to national parks and some courthouses. Read More...
